Activities

The organisation, which was set up in 1999, has undertaken several key activities and projects linked to public interest over the last 25 years.   

Here is a chronological list :

  • Preparing and facilitating the Kolkata Climate Action Plan (KCAP) under the aegis of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Govt of West Bengal (2023- ongoing)
  • Undertaking the vulnerability audit of islands in Indian Sundarbans Delta (ISD) as part of a consortium including IIT Kharagpur and Jadavpur University; and funded by WAPCOS, Govt of India as part of a project supported by Dept of Irrigation and Waterways, Govt of West Bengal. (May 2025 – ongoing)
  • Preparing the communication plan wrt conservation of Ramsar site East Kolkata Wetlands; funded by Dept of Environment, Govt of West Bengal under World Bank supported East Kolkata Wetland Management Plan (2024- ongoing)
  • Assessment of Non-Economic Loss and Damage (NELD) in Indian Sundarbans being assigned by CANSA ( 2025)
  • Post Remal recovery and resilience building in Sundarbans assigned by UNICEF (2024-25)
  • Pilot project on greenery assessment of Kolkata and preparing recommendations for four boroughs , assigned by KMC (2019 – 2025)
  • Undertaking detailed and first of its kind environment and climate change awareness program during puja to minimise environmental stress during durga puja in Kolkata, one of the highest example of footfall during a socio cultural and religious programmes in the world, which is nationally and internationally acclaimed (2007 – ongoing)
  • Undertaking a disaster management awareness programme and setting up of a temporary disaster shelter in Kumirmari island of Sundarbans being funded by Haldia Petrochemical Limited (HPL) under its CSR programme ( 2024)
  • Disaster awareness and advocacy programmes including those catered by climate change for school students in higher class / adolescents and other community representatives in Gosaba and Basanti blocks of South 24 parganas Sundarban being held in schools; being assigned by Department of Disaster Management and Civil Defence, Govt of West Bengal (2024 – 25)
  • Undertaking advocacy on integrating climate change agendas with G 20 discourse through organising specialised meetings in partnership with Climate Action Network South Asia (CANSA) (2023)
  • Disaster awareness and advocacy programmes including those catered by climate change for school students in higher class / adolescents and other community representatives in Sagar, Namkhana and Patharpratima blocks of South 24 parganas Sundarban being held in schools; being assigned by Department of Disaster Management and Civil Defence, Govt of West Bengal (2022 – 23)
  • Documentation, awareness, advocacy , development of communication strategy about the sustainability of Sunderbans wrt climate change since 2009, prepared the Media Communication Strategy for transboundary Sundarban; with support of / in association with various state government departments (Dept of Disaster management, Dept of Sundarban Affairs , World Bank and other organisations (2009- ongoing)
  • Documentation of 20 successful case studies under NREGA ; assigned by Panchayat & Rural Development department; Govt of West Bengal (2018)
  • Spreading awareness during various social festivals (Green Puja Award) within cities of West Bengal including Kolkata supported by Govt. of West Bengal, West Bengal Pollution Control Board, Kolkata Port Trust, KMC and others (2007-ongoing)
  • Preparation of People Biodiversity Registrar (PBR) of KMC , assigned by KMC (2019 – 2021)
  • Spreading disaster / fire awareness within community particularly senior school children/ adolescents  within Kolkata  and other urban areas; supported by Dept of Disaster Management; Govt of West Bengal, Dept of Fire and Emergency Services, GoWB (2014-2019)
  • Undertaking documentation and advocacy on Air Pollution of Kolkata; supported by Institute for Future Cities, University of Strathclyde, UK (2018-2019)
  • Facilitating Community empowerment through social engagement to improve status of Routine Immunization, institution delivery and related Social Behaviour Change Communications mainly in the urban areas of South 24 Parganas, West Bengal ( Baruipur , Jaynagar- Majilpur, Rajpur- Sonarpur, Maheshtala, Budge Budge, Pujali ULBs) and Kolkata Municipal Corporation with Unicef support and collaborated by ULBs  (2018-2019)
  • Social mobilisation for Routine Immunisation and selected interventions for child survival in selected areas of south 24 Parganas (2004-2018)
  • Social mobilization for polio and routine immunization within Kolkata Municipal Corporation supported by Unicef and collaborated by KMC (2004 – 2018) 
  • Collaborated in a joint project with New York City University’s Economics department about the environment and related issues of auto rickshaws and other public vehicle modes in Kolkata (2013- 2014)
  • Climate adapt project of ICLEI- South Asia in Howrah Municipal Corporation, a project funded by German Government and collaborated by Howrah Municipal Corporation and IIT Delhi (2010-2013)
  • Decentralized urban waste management project in KMC, supported by ITC and KMC (2012 -2013)
  • Effect of Exposed Environment on the Health Status of Urban Population in West Bengal’ in Kolkata, in collaboration with Jadavpur University, supported by Dept. of Environment, GoWB (2007-2010)
  • State of Solid Waste, Biomedical waste and hazardous Waste Management”; supported by West Bengal Pollution Control Board and Govt. of West Bengal (2010)
  • Prepared the Climate Vision Plan for city of Howrah as assigned by HMC (2010)
  • Reviewed “Climate Change Impact and Adaptation in Kolkata Metropolitan Area” executed by World Bank as requested by Govt. of West Bengal (2010)
  • Preparation of State of Environment Reports & Environment Management & Action Planning’ (on behalf of Consulting Engineering Services) assigned by KUSP under the dept. of Municipal Affairs, GoWB (2006-2009)
  • Comprehensive Health Development Project ’for the urban poor in Bhatpara, Kolkata, funded by Kolkata Urban Services for the Poor, a programme of Dept of Municipal Affairs, GoWB, supported by DFID (2007-2009)
  • Evaluation of the social and gross environmental impact of a technology shift – coal fire to oil fire conversion – in case of small and medium industries within Kolkata Municipal Corporation and its immediate surroundings (supported by WBPCB as part of the India – Canada Environment Facility) & its documentation (2005-2007)
  • Documenting urban disasters in Kolkata under UNICEF supported and KMC collaborated project (2006-2007))
  • Phase-I of The Model Facilities of Municipal Solid Wastes of North Dum Dum Municipality and New Barrackpore Municipality, West Bengal (assigned by WBPCB) & documentation.(2007)
  • Survey and Analysis of KMDA – KMC- EnGIO project on the evaluation of health indicators within slum population of Kolkata with Geographic Information System technology (2004-2006)
  • ‘Development and Implementation of Malarial control strategy in Calcutta and Howrah’. The project is supported by Environment Department (GOWB) (2001-2004)
  • Prepared ‘The KUSP Document’, a document specifying a DFID supported project for the urban poor within KMA (2004)
  • ‘Tramjatra’, regarding the Calcutta Melbourne Friendship of Tramways continuing in both Melbourne and Calcutta, (2001 – 2004).
  • Collaborated with different NGOs like WorldWide Fund for Nature (WWF); South Asian Fund for Human Initiative (SAFHI); Calcutta Ahead (a London based charity organisation) vis-à-vis malaria control and other health related projects (2000-2002).
  • Documentation & evaluation regarding application of Geographic Information System in the urban sector of West Bengal including health and social issues (2001-2002).
  • ‘Financial & other impacts of non motorized vehicle (Rickshaw) in Calcutta’s Urban structure’, undertaken by Prof. J. Whitelegg of Liverpool University & N. Williams of Aberdin University funded by DFID, British Govt. (1998)
  • Prepared a detailed status report on the functioning of Calcutta Metro with special emphasis on its role in countering environmental pollution, commissioned by the journal, ‘World Transport – Policy & Practice’, U.K, (1997)

Note:     The organisation has also organized / participated in number of national and international level meetings on critical environmental and health issues and play an important role in facilitating appropriate policy intervention. Key personnel linked to organisation are members of various important committees of Govt of West Bengal particularly Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Mayor, KMC has actually awarded EnGIO a certificate acknowledging its contribution in public health sectors of the city.  The organisation has also prepared several advocacy books / documents, documentary films, organized national and international level seminars from time to time.
