ABOUT ORGANISATION

Environment Governed Integrated Organisation, in short EnGIO, is an Indian non-profit working in various social sectors over two decades with focus on environment, public health, climate change, disaster mitigation, advocacy,  communication and documentation. The organization, registered under West Bengal Act XXVI of 1961 (Registration No SO095642 0f 1999-2000) and also part of the international network Climate Action Network South Asia (CANSA) as well as local environmental and social networks, has worked / is working in association with / with support of various government departments and agencies under Govt of West Bengal ; various multinational organisations, academic institutes , community groups, other non-profits and networks on a range important social issues.

EnGIO has also worked / works with premiere international and national organization, like UNICEF, World Bank, DFID and environmental nonprofits, advocacy organization and platforms like WWF, Observer Research Foundation (ORF), and Climate Action Network South Asia (CANSA) among others. The organisation works at state, national and national levels.

The organisation has been working / worked in collaboration with / with support of various West Bengal government departments / agencies like Department of Municipal Affair & Urban Development, Department of Environment, Department of Tourism,  Department of Disaster Management, Department of Sundarban Affairs, Department of Panchayat & Rural Devlopment, West Bengal Pollution Control Board, Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Howrah Municipal Corporation & other municipalities, Central Pollution Control Board, , academic institutions like Jadavpur University, Calcutta University, New York university etc.

The main areas of strength for EnGIO include field intervention, generating awareness, policy advocacy, communication at various levels, quality documentation, high level of social networking & community penetration apart from availability of technical expertise in various related fields.  

Documentation, including media and social communication, is also a thrust area of expertise and action in all the projects undertaken by the organisation. It has produced innumerable advocacy and IEC materials – both print and audiovisual – in context to various projects. Apart from these, the organisation has produced number of well researched and accepted reports on health, environmental, climate issues and documentary films.

As part of its communication and environment / climate related endevours , the organisation has prepared first of its transboundary media communication strategy for undivided Sundarban, spread over India and Bangladesh; as well as a dedicated website on Sundarban under World Bank supported project. From time to time EnGIO has played key role in organizing and participating in several national and international conferences and meetings.

The  organisation also runs a online news media portal  – www.theplurals.org – to cater news regarding the environment, climate change, public health and other developmental issues; which has built up significant credibility within a short time, Senior journalists &  experts anchor the portal.

The organisation is led by internationally known renowned environment and climate change expert, academic  and communication specialist and journalist Jayanta Basu, PhD but several other key environment, climate change, public health and developmental experts are associated with the same .
